New Jersey Man Faces DUI Charge
A man believed to have been intoxicated behind the wheel is now facing formal accusations following a serious crash, according to local police. The 66-year-old New Jersey man was arrested for suspected DUI after crashing into another vehicle and injuring its occupants. It is unclear whether he remains in police custody at this time, or if he has retained criminal defense counsel.
The details in the report are sparse, but it appears the man was driving eastbound on Route 571 when he attempted to negotiate a left-hand turn. He allegedly cut in front of another vehicle, driven by a 17-year-old girl and carrying an unknown number of passengers. The two vehicles collided.
The force of the impact pushed the struck vehicle into the curb, causing it to flip onto its roof. The 17-year-old driver and her passengers were all taken to a community medical center with injuries not considered life-threatening. The 66-year-old driver was taken to a separate medical center. He now faces charges of DUI along with other motor vehicle violations.
In DUI cases, it falls to New Jersey prosecutors to prove the formal accusations against the accused. This can be supported by breath tests and/or roadside sobriety checks which can help prove whether the individual was intoxicated at the time of the crash. However, the man’s criminal defense attorney will carefully review all of this material to assess whether the driver’s rights were respected in the aftermath of the accident and during his arrest. Legal and factual issues can be addressed in court and could result in a reduction or even dismissal of pending criminal charges.
