Auto Accident on New Jersey Turpike Injures 5
A man from Sellersville has been identified by police after he allegedly caused a car accident that seriously injured several people, according to local sources. The New Jersey State Police have confirmed the man will be charged with DUI following an auto accident wherein he was apparently driving the wrong way on the New Jersey Turnpike. Thankfully no one was killed in the incident.
According to the police report, it appears that around 8:30 p.m. the night of Nov. 27, the 26-year-old man was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike when he struck a northbound minivan head-on. The force of the impact seriously injured the wrong-way driver, who remains in the hospital as of this report. The driver of the other vehicle escaped with only minor injuries.
However, his two passengers, a 36-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy, both suffered serious injuries in the crash. Their current statuses are unknown. Police have charged the wrong-way driver with driving under the influence as well as with several moving violations. He will likely appear in court when he is released from the hospital.
If the man is found guilty of DUI, he could face jail time as well as the loss of his license. However, an auto accident causing injuries also allows the victims to file personal injury lawsuits against the driver responsible for the crash. These suits are handled in a New Jersey civil court, and do not require a criminal conviction in order for damages to be awarded to the injured parties.
