Most parents would likely agree that young children can be distracting when driving. Often, parents attempt to pacify them while also keeping an eye on the roadway, potentially resulting in a swerve or harsh braking or similar driving errors. However, law enforcement officers claim that a New Jersey mother was driving under the influence, or DUI; she now faces criminal charges as a result.

The incident that led to the 26-year-old woman’s arrest reportedly happened on a day in August. Police say that the woman was driving erratically and showed “clear signs of impairment.” It is unclear what those signs were.

Reports claim that K2 spice, a synthetic cannabinoid, was discovered in the console of the woman’s vehicle. They further claim that the woman, who allegedly had her 3-year-old daughter with her, had smoked the drugs shortly before driving. The woman was transported to the hospital, and her daughter was turned over to another adult.

In addition to the DUI charge, the New Jersey woman is also accused of endangering the welfare of a child and reckless driving, among others. Unfortunately, charges such as this can have a significant impact on a person’s life, including the ability to parent his or her children. Despite this, most people feel unprepared to make informed decisions regarding the direction their case will take. Fortunately, an experienced criminal defense attorney can help them fully understand the options available to them and the potential consequences of each, giving them more confidence in the decisions that they make.
